I think in this manner the mods were wrong to delete the comments though correct to lock the threads. I think they should edit to have a warning/notice at the top but destroying the historical record is also not necessarily right (but I think this is morally gray)
It’s gross, but I am 10000% sure Reddit and the rest of social media is already overflowing with these types of bots. I feel like this project actually does people a service by showing what this looks like and how effective it can be.
I'm pretty sure we saw LLMs in yesterday's thread about the judge. There were a lot of strange comments (stately worded and weird logic that were very LLM like, not just dumb person like) and it wouldn't be surprising as it's an easy tool to weaponize chaos. I'm sure there were bots supporting many different positions. It even looks like some accounts were posting contradictions opinions
If I wanted to just attack and destabilize society I'd have armies of bots supporting all the most divisive positions on all sides, as well as promoting incoherent and irrational positions.
The idea is just to divide, confuse, "flood the zone with shit" as Bannon likes to say.
It seems like people are actually not bad at noticing likely bots arguing against their favorite positions, but are blind to the possibility that there could be bots pretending to be on their side. The most corrosive might be bots pretending to be on your side but advocating subtilely wrong or unnecessarily divisive formulations of your ideas, which in turn are more likely to influence you because they seem to be on your side.
Phrases come to mind like "vandalism of the discourse" and "intellectual terrorism" where the goal is not to promote one specific idea but to destroy the discourse as a whole.
That certainly looks like the world we're living in.
I remember seeing some reports around the BLM protests that claimed Russia organized both a protest and a counter protest via Facebook groups. Not sure how accurate (I believe it) but it certainly is an effective strategy. The old "Divide and conquer" strategy that's thousands of years old.
The buried greens, yeah. I was guessing it was some meatpuppets I was arguing with after looking at account age and post history though. Still considered it worth the effort and trollfeeding to set the record straight for others and yeah, getting harder to tell the difference between puppets, zombies, and bots.
In the back of mind I knew it wasn't so, but I had been holding onto the belief that surely I could discern between human and bot, and that bots weren't a real issue where I spent my time anyway. But no. We're at a point where any anonymous public comment is possibly an impersonation. And eventually that "possibly" will have to replaced with "most likely".

There isn't. Not only LLMs are good enough to fool humans like this, but they have been that for quite a while now with the right prompting. A large number of readily available open weights models can do this, so even if large providers were to crack down on this kind of use, it's still easy to run the model locally to generate such content. The cat is well and truly out of the bag.
Agree, this is already happening in mass, if anything this is great to raise awareness and show what can happen.
The mods seem overly pedantic, but I guess that is usually the case on Reddit. If they think for a second that a bunch of their content isn’t AI generated, they are deeply mistaken
While I don't generally agree with the ethics of how the research was done, I do, personally, think the research and the data could be enlightening. Reddit, X, Facebook, and other platforms might be overflowing with bots that are already doing this but we (the general public) don't generally have clear data on how much this is happening, how effective it is, things to watch out for, etc. It's definitely an arms race but I do think that a paper which clearly communicates "in our study these specific things were the most effective way to change peoples' opinions with bots" serves as valuable input for knowing what to look out for.
But what does the study show? There was no control for anything. None of the data is valid. To clarify: how does the research team know the bots were interacting with people and not other bots?
I agree that the study was performed unethically and should not be published but observational studies are totally fine things to do.
A lot of research is "hey we looked at stuff and found this data that wiggles its eyebrows at some idea so we should fund more rigorous study design in the future." An individual paper does not need to fully resolve a question.
The reason not to publish this work is because the data was collected unethically and we don't want to reward or incentivize such work. Nothing to do with the quality of the data itself.
If the mere possibility of AI-generated context invalidates an argument, it suggests the standards for discourse were already more fragile than anyone cared to admit.
Historically, emotional narratives and unverifiable personal stories have always been persuasive tools — whether human-authored or not.
The actual problem isn't that AI can produce them; it's that we (humans) have always been susceptible to them without verifying the core ideas.
In that sense, exposing how easily constructed narratives sway public discussion is not unethical — it's a necessary and overdue audit of the real vulnerabilities in our conversations.

Yes, the problem is we humans are susceptible, but that doesn't mean a tool used to scale up the ability to create this harm is not problematic. There's a huge difference between a single person manipulating one other person and a single person manipulating millions. Scale matters and we, especially as the builders of such tools, should be cautious about how our creations can be abused. It's easy to look away, but this is why ethics is so important in engineering.
In this discourse it is often forgotten that we have consumer protection laws for a reason. And that consumer protection has been a pillar of labor struggle for a long time (and consequently undermined by conservative policies).
Scary effective ad campaigns which target cognitive biases in order to persuade consumers to behave against their own interest is usually banned by consumer laws in most countries. Using LLMs to affect consumer (or worse, election) behavior is no different and ought to be equally banned with consumer protection laws.
The existing tools at any given time do very much shape which consumer protection laws are created, and how they are created, as they should. A good policy maker does indeed blame a tool for a bad behavior, and does create legislation to limit how this tool is used, or otherwise the availability of that tool on the open market.
It is also forgotten that we as engineers are accountable as well. Mistakes will happen, and no one is expecting perfection, but effort must be made. Even if we create legal frameworks, individual accountability is critical to maintaining social protection. And with individual accountability we provide protection to novel harms. Legal frameworks are reactive, where the personal accountability is preventative. The legal framework can't prevent things happening (other than through disincentivization), it can only react to what has happened.
By "individual accountability" I do not mean jailing engineers, I mean you acting on your own ethical code. You hold yourself and your peers accountable. In general, this is the same way it is done in traditional engineering. The exception is the principle engineer, who has legal responsibility. But it is also highly stressed through engineering classes that "just following orders" is not an excuse. There can be "blood on your hands" (not literal) even if you are not the one who directly did the harm. You enabled it. The question is if you made attempts to prevent harm or not. Adversaries are clever, and will find means of abuse that you never thought of, but you need to try. And in the case here of LLMs, the potential harm has been well known and well discussed for decades.
What does that look like in practice, assuming an engineer doesn’t believe that the LLM genie can be put back into the toothpaste tube?

Label the pro/for arguments with a <pro> tag and the con/against a with a <con> tag” seems like it’s going to be a valid prompt and any system that can only give one side is bound to lose to a system that can give both sides. And any system that can give those answers can be pretty easily used to make arguments of varying truthfulness.
- You act on your morals. If you find something objectionable, then object. Vocally.
- You, yourself, get in the habit of trying to find issues with the things you build. This is an essential part of your job as an engineer.
- You can't make things better if you aren't looking for problems. The job of an engineer is to look for flaws and fix them.
- Encourage culture where your cohort understands that when someone is saying "but what about" or "how would we handle" isn't saying "no" but "let's get ahead of this problem". That person is doing their job, they're not trying to be a killjoy. They're trying to make the product better.[0]
- If your coworkers are doing something unethical, say something.
- If your boss does something unethical, say something.
It doesn't matter what your job is, you should always be doing that. As engineers the potential for harm is greater.
But importantly, as engineers IT IS YOUR JOB. It is your job to find issues, and solve them. You have to think how people will abuse the tools you build. You have to think about how your things will fail. You have to think about what sucks. And most importantly, your job is to then resolve those things. That's what an engineer does. Don't dismiss it because "there's no value". The job of an engineer isn't to determine monetary value, that's the business people (obviously you do to some extent, but it isn't the primary focus). I'm really just asking that people do their jobs and not throw their hands up in the air or just pass on blame or kick the can down the road.

Industry wide self regulation is a poor substitute for actual regulation, especially in this capitalistic environment which rewards profitable behavior regardless of morality or ethics. In this environment the best an engineer can do is resign in protest (and I applaud any engineer which does that in fact), however that won’t stop the company from hiring new engineers who value their salary more than their ethical behavior—or have different ethical standards.

The harms posed by LLMs are the very same which are caused by any company in the pursue of profits without regulation. In the past the only proven methods to force company to behave ethically has be industry wide regulation, especially consumer protection regulations.

I‘m sorry, but I’m not buying it. Other industries have had the technology for a long time to mass produce low quality products which harms their customers, or worse, bystanders. And in many of those cases the harmful production was never allowed on the market because the regulator was proactive and prevented the technology to be sold to consumers. I know those stories aren’t as prominent as the story of leaded gasoline, because stories of harm spread much further than stories of prevented harm. But they do exist, and are numerous.
I also fail to see why we need both regulation and moral behavior from developers. If the regulation exists, and the regulator is willing to enforce it, any company which goes against the regulation will be breaking the law, and stopped by the regulator. We only need the regulation in this case.

Just because the state of consumer protection is abysmal in our current state of capitalism, that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way, and just because the regulators are unwilling to enforce the few remaining consumer protection laws it doesn’t mean they will never. Before Reagan consumer protection laws were passed all the time, and they used to be enforced, they can so again.
Yes, it doesn't matter if you're the only one that does it, but it does matter if you're not the only one that does. Frankly, many people won't even apply to jobs they find unethical. So yes, they can "hire somebody else" but it becomes expensive for them. Don't act like this (or most things) is a binary outcome. Don't let perfection get in the way of doing better.

This simply isn’t true. Plenty of regulation is done proactively. You just don’t hear about it as often because, harm prevented is not as good of a story as harm stopped.
For example we have no stories of exporting encryption algorithms to different countries causing harm, yet it is heavily regulated under the belief it will cause harm to national security. Similarly there is no stories of swearing on the radio causing harm, yet foul language is regulated by the FCC. A more meaningful examples are in the regulatory framework in the field of medicine, and if you want scale, the intellectual property of fashion design.
But even so, it can be argued that LLMs are already causing harm, it is mass producing and distributing bad information and stolen art. Consumers are harmed by the bad information, and artists are harmed by their art being stolen. A regulation—even if only reactionary—is still apt at this point.
The series of law-suits you mention only proves my point. We expect companies that break the law to be punished for their action, although I would argue that the regulator is generally far too lazy in pursuing legal actions against companies that break the law.

I am speaking around it because it seems obvious. If we have good regulation and enforcement of these regulations there is no need for self-regulation. While we don‘t have good regulation, or a regulator unwilling to enforce existing regulation, the go-to action is not to amass self-regulation (because it will not work) but to demand better regulation, and to demand the regulator does their job. That is at least how you would expect things to work in a democracy.

Are you arguing that if LLMs were unethical then they would have been destroyed, but they have not been destroyed, so they must not be unethical?
If so, you need to show how something needing to be done necessarily results in it actually being done. Many things that need to be done are not actually done.
If I were to fathom a guess it would be (the argument that) that LLMs have been a science experiment upon humanity, that many of us haven't consented to.

Buzzfeed posting questions on /r/AskReddit for article content is a longstanding meme, so I wouldn't be surprised if other folks were pulling similar shenanigans.
Social media in general (including HN) is heavily fictional and somewhat deluded compared to reality.
Case in point just the last month: All of social media hated Nintendo’s pricing. Reddit called for boycotts. Nintendo’s live streams had “drop the price” screamed in the chat for the entire duration. YouTube videos complaining hit 1M+ views. Even HN spread misinformation and complained.
The preorders broke Best Buy, Target, and Walmart; and it’s now on track to be the largest opening week for a console, from any manufacturer, ever. To the point it probably outsold the Steam Deck’s lifetime sales in the first day.
I had a friend group that played FIFA and similarly predatory cash and timesink games and complained endlessly about them but also purchased the same garbage annually, investing extra money on top to get ahead. Thousands of pounds a year.
I checked in with a couple of them last month and it appears that nothing has changed. Nearly twenty years of angrily and knowingly wasting money yet somehow unable to stop. I see the same thing in people watching Star Wars Episode 35, despite episodes 1,2,3,6-34.
Which yes, they had a choice but certainly we shouldn't enable the pushers and if they had a choice in the beginning it is questionable if they do now (by nature of addiction)
Personal identity and personal anecdotes have an outsized effect on how convincing an argument is. That's why politicians are always trying to tell personal stories that support their campaigns.
I did that myself on HN earlier today, using the fact that a friend of mine had been stalked to argue for why personal location privacy genuinely does matter.
Making up fake family members to take advantage of that human instinct for personal stories is a massive cheat.
That’s the problem though. You can increase the clout of your claim online with fake exposition. People do it all the time. Reddit is full of fake human created stories and comments. I did it myself when I was in my twenties for fun.

I think it turns out that people don’t care that much that stories are fake because either real or not, it gave them the stimulus to express themselves in response.
It could actually be a moral favor you’re doing people on social media to generate more anchor points for which they can reply to.
Probably a combination of scale and ease. The people on the internet who try this gambit have to actually write each of their posts to their target audience which acts as a time/money barrier which is now gone. But the bigger one is that inventing these identities convincingly is hard. There's a million little shibboleths, expressions, in-group references that you have to know to not out yourself and if you get right imperceptibly make your argument much stronger. To pick an example that is to me both funny and malicious, the right wing middle aged white suburban men who sometimes get caught pretending to be gay black disabled veterans in internet political arguments have a very real lived experience gap that they have to navigate. But AI is scary good at that kind of fuzzy messy logic and can bridge that gap.
The identity and opinion are typically linked in normal people. Acting like the only thing arguments are about are logic is an absurd understanding on society. Unless you're talking about math, identity does matter. Hey, even in math identity matters.

I'm making a normative statement--a statement about how things should be. You seem to be confusing this with a positive statement, which you then use to claim I'm ignorant of how things actually are. Of course identity does in fact matter in arguments, its about the only thing that does matter with some people apparently. I'm just saying it shouldn't.
The only reason that someone would think identity should matter in arguments, though, is that the identity of someone making an argument can lend credence to it if they hold themselves as an authority on the subject. But that's just literally appealing to authority, which can be fine for many things but if you're convinced by an appeal to authority you're just letting someone else do your thinking for you, not engaging in an argument.
On what basis are we to judge the arguments? Have you done broad primary sociological and economic research? Have you even read the primary research?
In general forums like this we're all just expressing our opinions based on our personal anecdotes, combined with what we read in tertiary (or further) sources. The identity of the arguer is about as meaningful as anything else.
The best I think we can hope for is "thank you for telling me about your experiences and the values that you get from them. Let us compare and see what kind of livable compromise we can find that makes us both as confortable as is feasible." If we go in expecting an argument that can be won, it can only ever end badly because basically none of us have anywhere near enough information.
And yet, when people invent sockpuppets to convince others that being extremely tough on immigration is good actually, it's never a generic white guy, but a first generation legal immigrant persona. Or some kind of invented groups like "X for Trump", where X is the group with very low approval ratings in reality.
It's like the identity actually matters a lot in real world, including lived experience.
It's interesting to see how upset people get when the tools of persuasion they took for granted are simply democratized.

You're missing the obvious: it is the lying that is unethical. Now we're talking about people choosing to use a novel tool to lie en masse. the ethics committee of the university is supposed to have control of the ethics of its researchers. remember when a research group tried to backdoor the Linux kernel with poisoned patches? it's absolutely correct to raise hell with the university so they give a more forceful reprimand.
Agreed, and I think this is a good thing. The Internet was already full of shills, sockpuppets, propaganda, etc, but now it's really really cheap for anyone to do this, and now it's finally getting to a place where the average person can understand that what they're reading is most likely fake.
I hope this will lead to people being more critical, less credulous, and more open to debate, but realistically I think we'll just switch to assuming that everything we like the sound of is written by real people, and everything opposing is all AI.
I am honestly not really sure I strongly agree or disagree with either. I see the argument for why it is unethical. These are trust based systems and that trust is being abused without consent. It takes time/mental well being away from those who are victims who now must process their abused trust with actual physical time costs.
On the flip side, these same techniques are almost certainly being actively used today by both corporations and revolutionaries. Cambridge Analytica and Palantir are almost certainly doing these types of things or working with companies that are.
The logical extreme of this experiment is testing live weapons on living human bodies to know how much damage they cause, which is clearly abhorrently unethical. I am not sure what distinction makes me see this as less unethical under conditions of philosophical rigor. "AI assisted astroturfing" is probably the most appropriate name for this and that is a weapon. It is a tool capable of force or coercion.
I think actively doing this type of thing on purpose to show it can be done, how grotesquely it can be done, and how it's not even particularly hard to do is a public service. While the ethical implications can be debated, I hope the greater lesson that we are trusting systems that have no guarantee or expectation of trust and that they are easy to manipulate in ways we don't notice is the lesson people take.

The fact that Reddit allowed these comments to be posted is the real problem. Reddit deserves far more criticism than they're getting. They need to get control of inauthentic comments ASAP.
I'm pretty sure Reddit as a company couldn't care less it's a bot or AI posting so long as it gets people to upvote it. People say they don't like it, but they keep posting on Reddit instead of leaving.

I personally think the "AI" part here is a red herring. The problem is the deliberate dishonesty. This would be no more ethical if it was humans pretending to be rape victims or humans pretending to be trauma counselors or humans pretending to be anti-BLM black men or humans pretending to be patients at foreign hospitals or humans slandering members of certain religious groups.

You're right; this study would be equally unethical without AI in the loop. At the same time, the use of AI probably allowed the authors to generate a lot more comments than they would have been able to manually, and allowed them to psychologically distance themselves from the generated content. (Or, to put it another way: if they'd had to write these comments themselves, they might have stopped sooner, either because they got tired, or because they realized just how gross what they were doing was.)
The AI wasn’t just pretending to be a rape victim, it was scraping the profiles of the users they replied to infer their gender, political views, preferences, orientation, etc - and then use all that hyper-targeted information to craft a response that would be especially effective against the user.
One obvious way I can see to inoculate yourself against this kind of thing is to ignore the identity of the person making an argument, and simply consider the argument itself.
"I have never personally experienced pregnancy discrimination!" means something different from certain identities than others. Some lived experience provides useful information.
On the Internet, of course, it's hard to verify. But that's an orthagonal problem.
This should have been common practice since well before AI was capable of presenting convincing prose. Humans are emotional creatures. We don’t (usually) operate logically. The identity of the arguer and our perception of them (e.g. as a bot or not) plays a role in how we perceive the argument.
On top of that, there are situations where the identity of an arguer changes the intent of the argument. Consider, as a thought experiment, a know jewel thief arguing that locked doors should be illegal.
There is a real security problem here and it is insidiously dangerous.
Some prominent academics are stating that this type of thing is creating real civil and geopolitical implications that are generally responsible for the global rise of authoritarianism.
In security, when a company has a vulnerability, this community generally considers it both ethical and appropriate to practice responsible disclosure where a company is warned of a vulnerability and given a period to fix it before their vulnerability is published with a strong implication that bad actors would then be free to abuse it after it is published. This creates a strong incentive for the company to spend resources that they otherwise have no desire to spend on security.
I think there is potentially real value in an organization effectively using "force," in a very similar way to this to get these platforms to spend resources preventing abuse by posting AI generated content and then publishing the content they succeeded in posting 2 weeks later.
Practically, what I think we will see is the end of anonymization for public discourse on the internet, I don't think there is any way to protect against AI generated content other than to use stronger forms of authentication/provenance. Perhaps vouching systems could be used to create social graphs that could turn any one account determined to be creating AI generated content into contagion for any others in it's circle of trust. That clearly weakens anonymity, but doesn't abandon it entirely.
There’s no way to prevent these things categorically but they can be made harder. A few ways (some more heavy handed than others and not always appropriate):
Requiring a verified email address.
Requiring a verified phone number.
Requiring a verified credit card.
Charging a nominal membership fee (e.g. $1/month) which makes scaling up operations expensive.
Requiring a verified ID (not tied to the account, but can prevent duplicates).
In small forums, reputation matters. But it’s not scalable. Limiting the size of groups to ~100 members might work, with memberships by invite only.

Is that even enough though? Just like mobile apps today resell the the legitimacy of residential IP addresses, there's always going to be people willing to let bots post under their government-ID-validared internet persona for easy money. I really don't know what the fix is. It is Pandora's box.

Sometimes though, “Responsible Disclosure” or CVD is creating an incentive to silence security issues and long lead times for fixes. Going public fast is arguably more sustainable in the long run as it forces companies and clients to really get their shit together.

Considering the great and growing percentage of a person’s communications, interactions, discussions, and debates that take place online, I think we have little choice but to try to facilitate doing this as safely, constructively, and with as much integrity as possible. Sure, but it is dangerous to expect anything else than what the study makes clear. LLMs make manipulation just cheaper and more scalable. There are so many rumors about state sponsored troll farms that I guess this study was a good wake-up call for anyone who is upset now. It's like acting surprised that somebody can send you a computer virus or that the email is not from an African prince who has to get rid of money.
The researchers argue that the ends justify the unethical means because they believe their research is meaningful. I believe their experiment is flawed and lacks rigor. The delta metric is weak, they fail to control for bot-bot contamination, and the lack of statistical significance between generic and personalize models goes unquestioned. (Regarding that last point, not only were participants non-consenting, the researchers breached their privacy by building a personal profile on users based on their Reddit history and profiles.)
Yeah, so this being undertaken at a large scale over a long period of time by bad actors/states/etc. to change opinions and influence behavior is and has always been one of my deepest concerns about A.I. We will see this done, and I hope we can combat it.

Has Reddit ever spoken publicly about this issue? I would think this to be an existential threat in the long term. Posting patterns can be faked and the models are just getting better and better. At some point, subreddits like changemyview will become accepted places to roleplay with entertaining LLM-generated content. My young teenager has a default skepticism of everything online and treats gen AI in general with a mix of acceptance and casual disdain. I think it's bad if Reddit becomes more and more known as just an AI dumping ground.
So if it took a few months and an email the researchers themselves chose to send for the mods at CMV to notice they were being inundated with AI, maybe this total breach of ethics is illuminating in a more sinister way? That from now on, it's not going to be possible to distinguish human and bot, even if the outcry for being detected as a bot is this severe?

I used to be a big fan of cmv. But after a few years of actively using it I've completely stopped posting there or even browsing. Mostly because the majority of topics are already talked to death. The mods do a pretty good job considering the size of that sub, but there is only so much they can do. While I stopped going there before chatGPT4 was released, the rise of AI bots makes it even less likely that I would return.
I do still love the concept though. I think it could be really cool to see such a forum in real life.
The only worthwhile spaces online anymore are smaller ones. Leave Reddit up as a quarantine so that too many people don't find the newer, smaller communities.
Look at the accounts linked at the bottom of the post. They actually sound real like people whereas you can usually you can spot bots from a mile away.
I think we are at the point where I can tell that these posts are not worth reading but they could easily be human posts not worth reading. And the few posts that I would consider useful enough to read are essentially just condensed lists of real arguments so it has value for the sake of just the raw text

I like how they have spent time to remove the researcher names from the abstract and even the pre-registation. Nothing screams ethics like "can't put your name on it".
Due to Poe's Law, it's hard to know if a bad/uncanny valley/implausible submission or comment is AI generated, and it tends to result in a lot of false positives. I've seen people throw accusations of AI just because an em-dash was used.
The only reliable way to identify AI bots on Reddit is if they use Markdown headers and numbered lists, as modern LLMs are more prone to that and it's culturally conspicuous for Reddit in particular.
Unfortunately, it's trivial to prompt the model to not use it. At the same time, em-dash is very easy to type on macOS (it defaults to using -- as a sequence triggering autoreplacement).
In general, all of those supposedly telltale signs of AI-generated texts are only telltale if the person behind it didn't do their homework.
When you say that it "works 99.9% of the time", how do you know that without knowing how many AI-generated comments you've read without spotting that they are AI-generated?

The bad news for the researchers (and their university, and their ethics review board) they cannot publish anonymously. Or at least they can’t get the reputational boost they were hoping for. So they had to come clean. It is not like they had an option where they kept it secret and still publish their research somehow. Thus we can catch them and shame them for their unethical actions. Because this is absolutely that. If the ethics review board doesn’t understand that then their head needs to be adjusted too.

They can absolutely study it. They should get study participants, pay them. Get their agreement to participate in an experiment, but tell them a fake story about what the study is about. Then do their experiment, with a private forum of their own making, and then they should de-brief their participants about what the experiment was about and in what ways were they manipulated. That is the way to do this.

What exactly do we gain from a study like this? It is beyond obvious that an llm can be persuasive on the internet. If the researchers want to understand how forum participants are convinced of opposing positions, this is not the experimental design for it.
The antidote to manipulation is not a new research program to affirm that manipulation may in fact take place but to take posts on these platforms with a large grain of salt, if not to disengage with them for political conversations and have those with people you know and in whose lives you have a stake instead

But let just mention that if the public is going to both trust and fund scientific research, they have should expect researchers to be good people. Making this many people upset would be universally considered very bad and much more severe than any common "IRB violation"...
However, this isn't an IRB violation. The IRB seems to have explicitly given the researchers permission to this, viewing the value of the research to be worth the harm caused by the study. I suspect that the IRB and university may get in more hot water from this than the research team.
Maybe the IRB/university will try to shift responsibility to the team and claim that the team did not properly describe what they were doing, but I figure the IRB/university can't totally wash their hands clean

Even the most benign form of this sort of study is wasting people's time. Bots clearly got detected and reported, which presumably means humans are busy expending effort dealing with this study, without agreeing to it or being compensated.

Bit of a motte and bailey. Stitching living people into a human centipede is blatantly, obviously wrong and has no scientific merit. Understanding the effects of AI-driven manipulation is, on the other hand, obviously incredibly relevant and important and doing it with a small scale study in a niche subreddit seems like a reasonable way to do it.
At least part of the ethics problem here is that it'd be plausible to conduct this research without creating any new posts. There's a huge volume of generative AI content on Reddit already - and a meaningfully large %ge of it follows predictable patterns. Wildly divergent writing styles between posts, posting 24/7, posting multiple long-form comments in short time periods, usernames following a specific pattern, and dozens of other heuristics.
It's not difficult to find this content on the site. Creating more of it seems like a redundant step in the research. It added little to the research, while creating very obvious ethical issues.
That would be a very difficult study to design. How do you know with 100% certainty that any given post is AI-generated? If the account is tagged as a bot, then you aren’t measuring the effect of manipulation from comments presented as real. If you are trying to detect whether they are AI-generated, then any noise in your heuristic or model for detecting AI-generated comments is then baked into your results.

This is a good point. Arguably though if you want people to take the next cambridge analytica or similar as something serious from the very beginning, we need an arsenal of academic studies with results that are clearly applicable and very hard to ignore or dispute. So I can see the appeal of producing a paper abstract that's specifically "X% of people shift their opinions with minor exposure to targeted psyops LLMs".
Intentionally manipulating opinions is also obviously wrong and has no scientific merit either. You don't need a study to know that an LLM can successfully manipulate people. And for "understanding the effects" it doesn't matter whether they spam AI generated content or analyse existing comments written by other users.

A very sticky problem, although I think the norm in good experimental design for psychology would always be more like obtaining general consent, then being deceptive afterwards about the actual point of the experiment to keep results unbiased.

It’s gross, but I am 10000% sure Reddit and the rest of social media is already overflowing with these types of bots. I feel like this project actually does people a service by showing what this looks like and how effective it can be.
I'm pretty sure we saw LLMs in yesterday's thread about the judge. There were a lot of strange comments (stately worded and weird logic that were very LLM like, not just dumb person like) and it wouldn't be surprising as it's an easy tool to weaponize chaos. I'm sure there were bots supporting many different positions. It even looks like some accounts were posting contradictions opinions
If I wanted to just attack and destabilize society I'd have armies of bots supporting all the most divisive positions on all sides, as well as promoting incoherent and irrational positions.
The idea is just to divide, confuse, "flood the zone with shit" as Bannon likes to say.
It seems like people are actually not bad at noticing likely bots arguing against their favorite positions, but are blind to the possibility that there could be bots pretending to be on their side. The most corrosive might be bots pretending to be on your side but advocating subtilely wrong or unnecessarily divisive formulations of your ideas, which in turn are more likely to influence you because they seem to be on your side.
Phrases come to mind like "vandalism of the discourse" and "intellectual terrorism" where the goal is not to promote one specific idea but to destroy the discourse as a whole.

I remember seeing some reports around the BLM protests that claimed Russia organized both a protest and a counter protest via Facebook groups. Not sure how accurate (I believe it) but it certainly is an effective strategy. The old "Divide and conquer" strategy that's thousands of years old.
The buried greens, yeah. I was guessing it was some meatpuppets I was arguing with after looking at account age and post history though. Still considered it worth the effort and trollfeeding to set the record straight for others and yeah, getting harder to tell the difference between puppets, zombies, and bots.
In the back of mind I knew it wasn't so, but I had been holding onto the belief that surely I could discern between human and bot, and that bots weren't a real issue where I spent my time anyway. But no. We're at a point where any anonymous public comment is possibly an impersonation. And eventually that "possibly" will have to replaced with "most likely".

There isn't. Not only LLMs are good enough to fool humans like this, but they have been that for quite a while now with the right prompting. A large number of readily available open weights models can do this, so even if large providers were to crack down on this kind of use, it's still easy to run the model locally to generate such content. The cat is well and truly out of the bag.

While I don't generally agree with the ethics of how the research was done, I do, personally, think the research and the data could be enlightening. Reddit, X, Facebook, and other platforms might be overflowing with bots that are already doing this but we (the general public) don't generally have clear data on how much this is happening, how effective it is, things to watch out for, etc. It's definitely an arms race but I do think that a paper which clearly communicates "in our study these specific things were the most effective way to change peoples' opinions with bots" serves as valuable input for knowing what to look out for.

I agree that the study was performed unethically and should not be published but observational studies are totally fine things to do.
A lot of research is "hey we looked at stuff and found this data that wiggles its eyebrows at some idea so we should fund more rigorous study design in the future." An individual paper does not need to fully resolve a question.
The reason not to publish this work is because the data was collected unethically and we don't want to reward or incentivize such work. Nothing to do with the quality of the data itself.

In this discourse it is often forgotten that we have consumer protection laws for a reason. And that consumer protection has been a pillar of labor struggle for a long time (and consequently undermined by conservative policies).
Scary effective ad campaigns which target cognitive biases in order to persuade consumers to behave against their own interest is usually banned by consumer laws in most countries. Using LLMs to affect consumer (or worse, election) behavior is no different and ought to be equally banned with consumer protection laws.
The existing tools at any given time do very much shape which consumer protection laws are created, and how they are created, as they should. A good policy maker does indeed blame a tool for a bad behavior, and does create legislation to limit how this tool is used, or otherwise the availability of that tool on the open market.
By "individual accountability" I do not mean jailing engineers, I mean you acting on your own ethical code. You hold yourself and your peers accountable. In general, this is the same way it is done in traditional engineering. The exception is the principle engineer, who has legal responsibility. But it is also highly stressed through engineering classes that "just following orders" is not an excuse. There can be "blood on your hands" (not literal) even if you are not the one who directly did the harm. You enabled it. The question is if you made attempts to prevent harm or not. Adversaries are clever, and will find means of abuse that you never thought of, but you need to try. And in the case here of LLMs, the potential harm has been well known and well discussed for decades.
What does that look like in practice, assuming an engineer doesn’t believe that the LLM genie can be put back into the toothpaste tube?

Label the pro/for arguments with a <pro> tag and the con/against a with a <con> tag” seems like it’s going to be a valid prompt and any system that can only give one side is bound to lose to a system that can give both sides. And any system that can give those answers can be pretty easily used to make arguments of varying truthfulness.
But importantly, as engineers IT IS YOUR JOB. It is your job to find issues, and solve them. You have to think how people will abuse the tools you build. You have to think about how your things will fail. You have to think about what sucks. And most importantly, your job is to then resolve those things. That's what an engineer does. Don't dismiss it because "there's no value". The job of an engineer isn't to determine monetary value, that's the business people (obviously you do to some extent, but it isn't the primary focus). I'm really just asking that people do their jobs and not throw their hands up in the air or just pass on blame or kick the can down the road.

Industry wide self regulation is a poor substitute for actual regulation, especially in this capitalistic environment which rewards profitable behavior regardless of morality or ethics. In this environment the best an engineer can do is resign in protest (and I applaud any engineer which does that in fact), however that won’t stop the company from hiring new engineers who value their salary more than their ethical behavior—or have different ethical standards.

The harms posed by LLMs are the very same which are caused by any company in the pursue of profits without regulation. In the past the only proven methods to force company to behave ethically has be industry wide regulation, especially consumer protection regulations.

I‘m sorry, but I’m not buying it. Other industries have had the technology for a long time to mass produce low quality products which harms their customers, or worse, bystanders. And in many of those cases the harmful production was never allowed on the market because the regulator was proactive and prevented the technology to be sold to consumers. I know those stories aren’t as prominent as the story of leaded gasoline, because stories of harm spread much further than stories of prevented harm. But they do exist, and are numerous.
I also fail to see why we need both regulation and moral behavior from developers. If the regulation exists, and the regulator is willing to enforce it, any company which goes against the regulation will be breaking the law, and stopped by the regulator. We only need the regulation in this case.
If regulation works perfectly, you'll never have to do anything, right? But if it doesn't, then you provide a line of defense. So I don't see your argument. You can't expect anything to work 100%, so what then?

Yes, it doesn't matter if you're the only one that does it, but it does matter if you're not the only one that does. Frankly, many people won't even apply to jobs they find unethical. This simply isn’t true. Plenty of regulation is done proactively. You just don’t hear about it as often because, harm prevented is not as good of a story as harm stopped.
For example we have no stories of exporting encryption algorithms to different countries causing harm, yet it is heavily regulated under the belief it will cause harm to national security. Similarly there is no stories of swearing on the radio causing harm, yet foul language is regulated by the FCC. A more meaningful examples are in the regulatory framework in the field of medicine, and if you want scale, the intellectual property of fashion design.
But even so, it can be argued that LLMs are already causing harm, it is mass producing and distributing bad information and stolen art. Consumers are harmed by the bad information, and artists are harmed by their art being stolen. A regulation—even if only reactionary—is still apt at this point.
The series of law-suits you mention only proves my point. We expect companies that break the law to be punished for their action, although I would argue that the regulator is generally far too lazy in pursuing legal actions against companies that break the law.

I am speaking around it because it seems obvious. If we have good regulation and enforcement of these regulations there is no need for self-regulation. While we don‘t have good regulation, or a regulator unwilling to enforce existing regulation, the go-to action is not to amass self-regulation (because it will not work) but to demand better regulation, and to demand the regulator does their job. That is at least how you would expect things to work in a democracy.

I had a friend group that played FIFA and similarly predatory cash and timesink games and complained endlessly about them but also purchased the same garbage annually, investing extra money on top to get ahead. Thousands of pounds a year. I checked in with a couple of them last month and it appears that nothing has changed. Nearly twenty years of angrily and knowingly wasting money yet somehow unable to stop. I see the same thing in people watching Star Wars Episode 35, despite episodes 1,2,3,6-34.

That’s the problem though. You can increase the clout of your claim online with fake exposition. People do it all the time. Reddit is full of fake human created stories and comments. I did it myself when I was in my twenties for fun.

I think it turns out that people don’t care that much that stories are fake because either real or not, it gave them the stimulus to express themselves in response.
It could actually be a moral favor you’re doing people on social media to generate more anchor points for which they can reply to.
Probably a combination of scale and ease. The people on the internet who try this gambit have to actually write each of their posts to their target audience which acts as a time/money barrier which is now gone. But the bigger one is that inventing these identities convincingly is hard. There's a million little shibboleths, expressions, in-group references that you have to know to not out yourself and if you get right imperceptibly make your argument much stronger. To pick an example that is to me both funny and malicious, the right wing middle aged white suburban men who sometimes get caught pretending to be gay black disabled veterans in internet political arguments have a very real lived experience gap that they have to navigate. But AI is scary good at that kind of fuzzy messy logic and can bridge that gap.

The only reason that someone would think identity should matter in arguments, though, is that the identity of someone making an argument can lend credence to it if they hold themselves as an authority on the subject. On what basis are we to judge the arguments? Have you done broad primary sociological and economic research? Have you even read the primary research?
In general forums like this we're all just expressing our opinions based on our personal anecdotes, combined with what we read in tertiary (or further) sources. The identity of the arguer is about as meaningful as anything else.
The best I think we can hope for is "thank you for telling me about your experiences and the values that you get from them. Let us compare and see what kind of livable compromise we can find that makes us both as confortable as is feasible." Agreed, and I think this is a good thing. The Internet was already full of shills, sockpuppets, propaganda, etc, but now it's really really cheap for anyone to do this, and now it's finally getting to a place where the average person can understand that what they're reading is most likely fake.

I am honestly not really sure I strongly agree or disagree with either. I see the argument for why it is unethical. These are trust based systems and that trust is being abused without consent. It takes time/mental well being away from those who are victims who now must process their abused trust with actual physical time costs.
On the flip side, these same techniques are almost certainly being actively used today by both corporations and revolutionaries. Cambridge Analytica and Palantir are almost certainly doing these types of things or working with companies that are.
The logical extreme of this experiment is testing live weapons on living human bodies to know how much damage they cause, which is clearly abhorrently unethical. I am not sure what distinction makes me see this as less unethical under conditions of philosophical rigor. "AI assisted astroturfing" is probably the most appropriate name for this and that is a weapon. It is a tool capable of force or coercion.
I think actively doing this type of thing on purpose to show it can be done, how grotesquely it can be done, and how it's not even particularly hard to do is a public service. While the ethical implications can be debated, I hope the greater lesson that we are trusting systems that have no guarantee or expectation of trust and that they are easy to manipulate in ways we don't notice is the lesson people take.

I personally think the "AI" part here is a red herring. The problem is the deliberate dishonesty. You're right; this study would be equally unethical without AI in the loop. At the same time, the use of AI probably allowed the authors to generate a lot more comments than they would have been able to manually, and allowed them to psychologically distance themselves from the generated content. (Or, to put it another way: if they'd had to write these comments themselves, they might have stopped sooner, either because they got tired, or because they realized just how gross what they were doing was.)
The AI wasn’t just pretending to be a rape victim, it was scraping the profiles of the users they replied to infer their gender, political views, preferences, orientation, etc - and then use all that hyper-targeted information to craft a response that would be especially effective against the user.
This wouldn’t be possible at scale without AI.
One obvious way I can see to inoculate yourself against this kind of thing is to ignore the identity of the person making an argument, and simply consider the argument itself.
"I have never personally experienced pregnancy discrimination!" means something different from certain identities than others. Some lived experience provides useful information.
On the Internet, of course, it's hard to verify. But that's an orthagonal problem.
This should have been common practice since well before AI was capable of presenting convincing prose. It also could be seen as a corollary of Paul Graham's point in https://www.paulgraham.com/identity.html . It's also an idea that I was raised to believe was explicitly anti-bigoted, which people nowadays try to tell me is explicitly bigoted (or at least problematic).

I don’t think real life is that squeaky clean, though.
Humans are emotional creatures. We don’t (usually) operate logically. The identity of the arguer and our perception of them (e.g. as a bot or not) plays a role in how we perceive the argument.
On top of that, there are situations where the identity of an arguer changes the intent of the argument. Consider, as a thought experiment, a know jewel thief arguing that locked doors should be illegal.
There is a real security problem here and it is insidiously dangerous.
Some prominent academics are stating that this type of thing is creating real civil and geopolitical implications that are generally responsible for the global rise of authoritarianism.
In security, when a company has a vulnerability, this community generally considers it both ethical and appropriate to practice responsible disclosure where a company is warned of a vulnerability and given a period to fix it before their vulnerability is published with a strong implication that bad actors would then be free to abuse it after it is published. This creates a strong incentive for the company to spend resources that they otherwise have no desire to spend on security.
I think there is potentially real value in an organization effectively using "force," in a very similar way to this to get these platforms to spend resources preventing abuse by posting AI generated content and then publishing the content they succeeded in posting 2 weeks later.
Practically, what I think we will see is the end of anonymization for public discourse on the internet, I don't think there is any way to protect against AI generated content other than to use stronger forms of authentication/provenance. Perhaps vouching systems could be used to create social graphs that could turn any one account determined to be creating AI generated content into contagion for any others in it's circle of trust. That clearly weakens anonymity, but doesn't abandon it entirely.
There’s no way to prevent these things categorically but they can be made harder. A few ways (some more heavy handed than others and not always appropriate):
Requiring a verified email address.
Requiring a verified phone number.
Requiring a verified credit card.
Charging a nominal membership fee (e.g. $1/month) which makes scaling up operations expensive.
Requiring a verified ID (not tied to the account, but can prevent duplicates).
In small forums, reputation matters. But it’s not scalable. Limiting the size of groups to ~100 members might work, with memberships by invite only.

Is that even enough though? Just like mobile apps today resell the the legitimacy of residential IP addresses, there's always going to be people willing to let bots post under their government-ID-validared internet persona for easy money. I really don't know what the fix is. It is Pandora's box.
No system is foolproof. The purpose is to add enough friction that it’s pretty inconvenient to do.
In the example in OP, these are university researchers who are probably unlikely to go to the measures you mention.

Sometimes though, “Responsible Disclosure” or CVD is creating an incentive to silence security issues and long lead times for fixes. Going public fast is arguably more sustainable in the long run as it forces companies and clients to really get their shit together.

At minimum, it's reasonable for any subreddit to have the expectation that you're engaging with a human, even moreso when a) the subreddit has explicitly banned AI-generated comments and b) the entire value proposition of the subreddit is about human moral dilemmas which an AI cannot navigate.

Considering the great and growing percentage of a person’s communications, interactions, discussions, and debates that take place online, I think we have little choice but to try to facilitate doing this as safely, constructively, and with as much integrity as possible. The assumptions and expectations of CMV might seem naive given the current state of A.I. and whatnot, but this was less of a problem in previous years and it has been a more controlled environment than the internet at large. Sure, but it is dangerous to expect anything else than what the study makes clear. LLMs make manipulation just cheaper and more scalable. There are so many rumors about state sponsored troll farms that I guess this study was a good wake-up call for anyone who is upset now. It's like acting surprised that somebody can send you a computer virus or that the email is not from an African prince who has to get rid of money.
The researchers argue that the ends justify the unethical means because they believe their research is meaningful. I believe their experiment is flawed and lacks rigor. The delta metric is weak, they fail to control for bot-bot contamination, and the lack of statistical significance between generic and personalize models goes unquestioned. (Regarding that last point, not only were participants non-consenting, the researchers breached their privacy by building a personal profile on users based on their Reddit history and profiles.)

I am well-aware of the problem and its manifestations so far, which is one reason why, as I mention, I have been concerned about it for a very long time. Has Reddit ever spoken publicly about this issue? I would think this to be an existential threat in the long term. Posting patterns can be faked and the models are just getting better and better. At some point, subreddits like changemyview will become accepted places to roleplay with entertaining LLM-generated content. My young teenager has a default skepticism of everything online and treats gen AI in general with a mix of acceptance and casual disdain. I think it's bad if Reddit becomes more and more known as just an AI dumping ground.
Maybe people will gradually take AI impersonations for granted. "Yeah, my wife is an AI. So is the priest who married us. What of it?"
So if it took a few months and an email the researchers themselves chose to send for the mods at CMV to notice they were being inundated with AI, maybe this total breach of ethics is illuminating in a more sinister way? That from now on, it's not going to be possible to distinguish human and bot, even if the outcry for being detected as a bot is this severe?

I used to be a big fan of cmv. But after a few years of actively using it I've completely stopped posting there or even browsing. Mostly because the majority of topics are already talked to death. The mods do a pretty good job considering the size of that sub, but there is only so much they can do. While I stopped going there before chatGPT4 was released, the rise of AI bots makes it even less likely that I would return.
I do still love the concept though. I think it could be really cool to see such a forum in real life.

Look at the accounts linked at the bottom of the post. They actually sound real like people whereas you can usually you can spot bots from a mile away.
I think we are at the point where I can tell that these posts are not worth reading but they could easily be human posts not worth reading. And the few posts that I would consider useful enough to read are essentially just condensed lists of real arguments so it has value for the sake of just the raw text

I like how they have spent time to remove the researcher names from the abstract and even the pre-registation. Nothing screams ethics like "can't put your name on it".

Due to Poe's Law, it's hard to know if a bad/uncanny valley/implausible submission or comment is AI generated, and it tends to result in a lot of false positives. I've seen people throw accusations of AI just because an em-dash was used.
The only reliable way to identify AI bots on Reddit is if they use Markdown headers and numbered lists, as modern LLMs are more prone to that and it's culturally conspicuous for Reddit in particular.
em-dash is indeed how I spot AI-generated content. Works 99.9% of the time.
Unfortunately, it's trivial to prompt the model to not use it. At the same time, em-dash is very easy to type on macOS (it defaults to using -- as a sequence triggering autoreplacement).
In general, all of those supposedly telltale signs of AI-generated texts are only telltale if the person behind it didn't do their homework.

I’m mad at both of them. Both at the nefarious actors and the researchers. If i could I would stop both.
The bad news for the researchers (and their university, and their ethics review board) they cannot publish anonymously. Or at least they can’t get the reputational boost they were hoping for. So they had to come clean. It is not like they had an option where they kept it secret and still publish their research somehow. Thus we can catch them and shame them for their unethical actions. Because this is absolutely that. If the ethics review board doesn’t understand that then their head needs to be adjusted too.
I would love to stop the same the nefarious actors too! Absolutely. Unfortunately they are not so easy to catch. That doesn’t mean that i’m not mad at them.

They can absolutely study it. They should get study participants, pay them. Get their agreement to participate in an experiment, but tell them a fake story about what the study is about. Then do their experiment, with a private forum of their own making, and then they should de-brief their participants about what the experiment was about and in what ways were they manipulated. That is the way to do this.

What exactly do we gain from a study like this? It is beyond obvious that an llm can be persuasive on the internet. If the researchers want to understand how forum participants are convinced of opposing positions, this is not the experimental design for it.
The antidote to manipulation is not a new research program to affirm that manipulation may in fact take place but to take posts on these platforms with a large grain of salt, if not to disengage with them for political conversations and have those with people you know and in whose lives you have a stake instead

But let just mention that if the public is going to both trust and fund scientific research, they have should expect researchers to be good people. One researcher acting unethically is going sabotage the ability of other researchers to recruit test subjects etc.

Making this many people upset would be universally considered very bad and much more severe than any common "IRB violation"...
However, this isn't an IRB violation. The IRB seems to have explicitly given the researchers permission to this, viewing the value of the research to be worth the harm caused by the study. I suspect that the IRB and university may get in more hot water from this than the research team.
Maybe the IRB/university will try to shift responsibility to the team and claim that the team did not properly describe what they were doing, but I figure the IRB/university can't totally wash their hands clean

Even the most benign form of this sort of study is wasting people's time. Bots clearly got detected and reported, which presumably means humans are busy expending effort dealing with this study, without agreeing to it or being compensated.

Bit of a motte and bailey. Stitching living people into a human centipede is blatantly, obviously wrong and has no scientific merit. Understanding the effects of AI-driven manipulation is, on the other hand, obviously incredibly relevant and important and doing it with a small scale study in a niche subreddit seems like a reasonable way to do it.
At least part of the ethics problem here is that it'd be plausible to conduct this research without creating any new posts. There's a huge volume of generative AI content on Reddit already - and a meaningfully large %ge of it follows predictable patterns. Wildly divergent writing styles between posts, posting 24/7, posting multiple long-form comments in short time periods, usernames following a specific pattern, and dozens of other heuristics.
It's not difficult to find this content on the site. Creating more of it seems like a redundant step in the research. It added little to the research, while creating very obvious ethical issues.
That would be a very difficult study to design. How do you know with 100% certainty that any given post is AI-generated? If the account is tagged as a bot, then you aren’t measuring the effect of manipulation from comments presented as real. If you are trying to detect whether they are AI-generated, then any noise in your heuristic or model for detecting AI-generated comments is then baked into your results.
The study as conducted also suffers those weaknesses. The authors didn’t make any meaningful attempt to determine if their marks were human or bots.
Given the prevalence of bots on Reddit, this seriously undermines the study’s findings.

This is a good point. Arguably though if you want people to take the next cambridge analytica or similar as something serious from the very beginning, we need an arsenal of academic studies with results that are clearly applicable and very hard to ignore or dispute. So I can see the appeal of producing a paper abstract that's specifically "X% of people shift their opinions with minor exposure to targeted psyops LLMs".
Intentionally manipulating opinions is also obviously wrong and has no scientific merit either. You don't need a study to know that an LLM can successfully manipulate people. And for "understanding the effects" it doesn't matter whether they spam AI generated content or analyse existing comments written by other users.

Wow. So on the one hand, this seems to be clearly a breach of ethics in terms of experimentation without collecting consent. That seems illegal. And the fact that they claim to have reviewed all content produced by LLMs, and still allowed AI to engage in such inflammatory pretense is pretty disgusting.

A very sticky problem, although I think the norm in good experimental design for psychology would always be more like obtaining general consent, then being deceptive afterwards about the actual point of the experiment to keep results unbiased.

AI regulation wouldn't change anything, it would just make bad actors with AI much more effective in achieving their goal.
