The article did not define emotional labor. I have seen this term several times. I still don’t know what it means besides women feel they got the short end of the stick. That is I don’t think the term clarify or help illustrate the issues affecting real couples. I wish they would define it in more concrete terms. Like can not afford rent in a good school district. Can’t take time off to care for sick child. Or man doesn’t do his share of domestic chores.
I feel this dialogue is so childish this is part of having a partner, People are emotional creatures and so have emotions that need to be managed.
Gendering it helps no one, it would be better to make people aware that it needs doing and can they handle it.
This is actually an interesting avenue of investigation - I wonder if there's an empirical way to measure the average amount of time/effort people spend on 'keeping' their partner across male/female, male/male and female/female relationships.
