The SciFi Masterworks series includes some of the best SF writing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks
Great collection. I have read at least half of them. I'm going to bookmark this and read the rest, re-read some of them.
Wikipedia article mentions also these overlapping series that have some great additions.
I looked also Gollancz Classic SF (1986–1987) https://store.gollancz.co.uk/collections/classic-science-fic...
and VGSF Classics (1988–1990) mentioned. https://sfandfantasy.co.uk/php/gallery-a.php?subsection=100
Piggybacking off this, "old" (pre 1980) sci-fi tends to hold up surprisingly well, for me, at least
I always feel like the Hyperion cantos doesn't get enough love. There are some fantasy elements mixed in, time dilation and long haul space travel plays an important part of the story in interesting ways (later in the series)
books or movies?
