Whenever I see posts like this I'm always surprised to see these people are still using Chrome. I agree it's another user hostile move by Chrome, but if this is a big deal to you then how have you tolerated Chrome up until now?
I feel this way too, but get occasionally reminded that the vast vast vast majority of the world equates The Internet with mobile Safari or Chrome and hasn't thought about Firefox in 12 years if you're lucky. It's an "old browser" in some people's heads.
I use chrome primarily when something appears broken in Firefox and i want to test if it’s a ff browser issue. Turns out it’s pretty much never a ff browser issue. Cmd+q
This didn't happen for me, apparently because I already had "Show Gemini in Chrome in Mac menu bar and turn on keyboard shortcut" disabled.

I use a Chromium fork (Brave) for this. No need to install the actual Google malware
