In the early '90's before the VLC media server/player was a thing, the Videolan Corporation had developed some device drivers for Windows NT3 which enabled those few offices having supported ethernet adapters to videoconference locally as well as sometimes on the web also.
This never really took off, and eventually was generously open-sourced.
One day I found some early industrial large format printers having a RJ45 socket labeled Videolan. That was in the hardware, and Ethernet won't help you now, except for the cables. The software was for NT3.5 as the dedicated dual-nic server for the "print farm" where you chose Videolan drivers for the printer control NIC and a regular Ethernet driver for the network NIC. Other than the proprietary printers on the Videolan bus, the regular Ethernet clients of the NT server PC were Macs in the art department.
Anyway this was pretty early for somebody to be controlling industrial "robots" over Videolan even though it was designed for media to begin with.
Now looks like it's 21st century time, and just starting to get good :)
