I wonder if we’ll see a reduced feature set in Europe as well, especially when it’s first released. Honestly it’s incredible it’s taken this long for it to come out
> can you drive it to work and send it home by itself? And then ask it to come and get you?
No. The Tesla webpage and in-car guidance are clear on what you can expect from this feature and how the driver is expected to be paying attention. The car will also sense when you are not paying attention and take measures accordingly.
No, they have remote drivers for their "autonomous" taxis.
In other words, they're not really "autonomous". And they don't operate at night --- probably not in bad weather either --- or when communications are unavailable.
"Tesla is the only autonomous vehicle company in the United States that permits its remote operators to directly steer, accelerate, and brake vehicles on public roads."
I see for Tesla assisted driving is not equal to autonomous. I wasn't aware of that. So they are hiring people to drive them like drones.. Somebody else said this and I didn't quite understand it then.. Thanks.
So what happens to all the idiots that declared they will never buy a Tesla simply because of the naming choices that Elon made? Are they finally checking that one item off their list of reasons why they will never ever ever buy a Tesla?
It’s interesting that you focused on so called “idiots” for having an issue with misleading branding and not the actual idiots who came up with that name
I’ve been pretty critical of people who felt that “autopilot” meant way more than it did. For anyone who’s spent time in aviation, autopilots historically have been extremely basic: hold altitude, hold heading, hold climb, etc. I do get the confusion for people not in that space, but calling basic lane-following and adaptive speed control features “autopilot” is pretty defensible.
But “full self driving” is on another level entirely. There’s no ambiguity on what that should mean. Full. Self. Driving. Tesla’s actions here are clearly criminally misleading here to any functioning justice system.
Not OP, but it's ironic how Musk/Tesla fans tell us we shouldn't make political decisions when buying products, but they only seem to be angry when someone boycotts their political heroes.
So which is it? Should buying decisions be political or not?
I personally wouldn't buy a Tesla for many individual reasons (terrible quality, not valuing safety, racist work environments, Musk's behavior), but just the terrible quality would be enough for me. I don't want a car that's in the shop all the time.
They continue to not buy a product from a fraudster. Not much changes, I propose. They buy a BYD or other quality non Tesla EV (Tesla sells ~2M EVs/year, China can build ~50M/year in aggregate, as of this comment). Those who still want Teslas buy them.
Tesla has become a vanity project operated by an emotionally unhealthy, power seeking narcissist who will chase attention and validation for the foreseeable future. It is not a critical component to global electrification. China will do all the heavy lifting (as of this comment, ~60% of Chinese auto sales are electric [largest auto market globally], and ~29% globally for 2026; exports are currently ~12M/year run rate, constrained by marine shipping capacity). Buy from Tesla, don’t buy from Tesla, doesn’t matter.
(disclosure: I own several Teslas purchased 2018-2022, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, sometimes we believe and trust the wrong people, we win or we learn)
It’s a parlor trick, having experienced “FSD” myself as a Tesla owner (as well as tens of thousands of miles of enhanced autopilot in a legacy Model S across the continental US). I’m safer in a Waymo, because they know how to actually build an autonomous vehicle. I’ll put my kids in a Waymo, I do not allow FSD to be active in my
Teslas. It’s just theater to juice Tesla enterprise value, not a human safe autonomy system.
I don’t need to be able to own it, I need it to work and be safe. Let those who use FSD own the consequences of system failure. They’ll learn eventually. You’re never going to talk cultists out of their cult of personality, imho.
While I would not pay for Tesla assisted self driving, I have seen it provide daily utility to many drivers, especially older ones.
At only $100 per month on a $40k vehicle, I consider it to be a serious product and not just a parlor trick, since no other car seller comes close to offering it anywhere near that price.
It's not a parlor trick no more than a Waymo or Zoox driving around on its own. Your political derangement is clouding your ability to understand what is going on in the world.
Lidar is a hard requirement to safe autonomy. Elon took the wrong (cheaper) path (to juice Tesla profits), and lies to smooth over it. Tesla vision only autonomy will never be as safe as Waymo and others who use Lidar. That’s not politics, that’s facts. Vehicles require the laser generated point cloud.
If you think I’m wrong, let me put you in the path of a Tesla at speed at night with low contrast. Best case, I’m wrong. I’m fine being wrong. There is no shame in being wrong, only in ignoring facts and data. Worst case, you’re dead and no one cares. I don’t want this for you, and you shouldn’t want this for you either.
Do you feel lucky? You can supply the Tesla or I can (I have a Model S, X, and Y, all upgraded to the latest self driving hardware). If you’re a believer, I’ll give you the opportunity to put your faith in your savior. Again, I do not recommend, but I believe in free will.
I live in a neighborhood where the same Model Y you can buy at the dealer is driving around by itself with no one behind the wheel. I've already completed your challenge.
I am unwilling to argue with someone who ignores facts and reality. My apologies. The facts and evidence stand that Tesla’s autonomy is incomplete compared to competitors, and present a life safety risk. If you’re unwilling to put your life at risk, you don’t believe in the safety of the subject system. It’s that simple.
If you don’t believe in it, just say “I’m going to advocate for it because of my belief system and feelings but I don’t trust it myself.” That’s far more intellectually honest then “I believe in it enough to aggressively defend it publicly but won’t stand in front of the car because I don’t actually trust it.”
They said they are already taking the risk, as is everyone who lives in a neighborhood with a Tesla owner.
You can still be right that Tesla vision only system are more dangerous, but your experimental challenge proves nothing because the cars are already live driving in the real world under poor conditions.
Tesla has become a vanity project operated by an emotionally unhealthy, power seeking narcissist who will chase attention and validation for the foreseeable future. It is not a critical component to global electrification.
Tesla was always an option on batteries improving at roughly the widely forecasted rates. This is the same information that the established automakers used to not focus on electric vehicles.

They are trying to use it as taxi.. are they blocking the features in order to use it for taxis only?
No, they have remote drivers for their "autonomous" taxis.

No, but it can drive me to work and park, come pick me up at the door after work, and drive me home

Juliet called this out hundreds of years ago:
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes

Key Consumer Reports Findings for Tesla • Brand Reliability Rank: Tesla jumped into the top 10 for brand reliability at 9th place out of 26 brands
I'd take it over any German car in a heartbeat.
EVs are way more reliable than ICE so the fact that Tesla only got 9th is actually sad.

No one but Tesla has point to point autonomous driving in a consumer car.
