Actual title is:- A grassroots plan to reclaim the internet from 'big tech'
Neither titles describes the content properly. The first part of the article delves into outages and a plan what to cope as a contingency - it's actually a reality that many of those in rural areas face nearly every year, loss of services for an extended period of time and a certain realisation they need to move towards independent power backup and data access from satellites or rely on someone who has a high gain mobile antenna setup that can use towers much further away (if aplicable.) Hotspots and phones with wifi calling means that simple sms will allow basic communication with their own phone rather than have to ask to make calls on someone else's mobile phone.
The last half of the article pivots for reasons unknown to Techofudalism [1] concerns as well as concerns from the fallout of some US based tech companies hero worshipping their defacto King.
As for the parting shot over the bow of the article - those in the country have moved away from the $$$$$$$ Aussie based satellite data as starlink is far more economic. Yes an affordable replacement for that needs to be found. [2]
What matters when power goes out is being able to access essential services, their websites if need be, weather station information which also needs to have backup power and communication capabilities, access to road information as well as other local, state and federal govt sites.
[2] Pity NBN I was killed off, it needed improving and more resilience, subsequent versions of NBN II or III where copper as added back into the mix was a bit BS - the Telstra techs if asked could have amply explained why that was not going to work as it should - and those who had ASDL speeds were suddenly faced with dial up speeds from what I was told. {Also not helping was the need for profit - meaning a version of joiner that was found to be temporary at best, were reintroduced - why let a warehouse full of useless product go to waste }
