I've been at ESUG a few years ago. I can definitely recommend it if you want access to all kinds of Smalltalk and Pharo experts, and listen to all kinds of topics that contain a high amount of expertise.
I remember that I wanted a visual step by step debugger for a visualization library [1]. I was lucky enough to find the library maintainer himself. He liked the idea, and within just 30 to 60 minutes we programmed a prototype in (this was around ChatGPT 3.5, so pure hand coding).
Happy to see something related to ESUG so up in HN.
Smalltalk still has a small group of passionate people who love the language, the environment, and its concepts.
For some reason, Buenos Aires has a “large” group of Smalltalkers (large relative to the total, which is small in absolute terms). This group usually organizes the ESUG event in Argentina with very few sponsors.
I attend the National University of Quilmes in Buenos Aires, where my first OOP course was taught in Smalltalk, specifically CUIS [1]. It was a lot of fun and a very nice introduction to object-oriented thinking.
As a curiosity, there are two "competing" sections for this subject: one that uses CUIS and the other one uses Wollok[2] (an in-house language). It's funny to discuss which one is better with classmates.
Some OOP professors who taught at LIFIA (like Maximo Prieto, who sadly passed away at the beginning of 2026) and UBA (Hernán Wilkinson) had a lot of influence at the University of Buenos Aires, La Plata, and Quilmes.
I just had a realization: I've been hearing and reading about Smalltalk and how great (though slow) it was for the past 30 years … but I've never once seen an application, let alone a killer one.
Look for Golden Tiger, which became The Analyst. Xerox Special Information Systems built it in Smalltalk-80 for the intelligence community in the early 80s, when a spreadsheet alone was still novel. The Analyst was much more: an integrated analyst workbench with word processing, a spreadsheet with multimedia cells and live updates, charts, maps, sketching, outlines, databases, terminal emulation, and an expert-system shell, all hyperlinked and cut-and-pasteable into compound-document reports. It's the most famous full Smalltalk app AFAIK. Absurdly ahead of its time. Some features still aren't matched by Office or Workspace today.
But overall there weren’t many Smalltalk apps for individual users. Most were organizational: JPMorgan (derivatives risk), Orient Overseas Container Line (global shipping logistics), Texas Instruments (fab automation), Deutsche Bahn (scheduling the German railway system). These were complex internal systems built on a graphical, fast-development, integrated platform, when such things were rare and nowhere available off the shelf. Customers often considered them "secret sauce" or strategic differentiators and weren't going to say much about them externally. Vendors were often prohibited from naming customers. As of mid-2025 at least, JPMorgan’s Kapital was still in production, and JPMorgan was still hiring Smalltalk developers for it.
GemStone, the Smalltalk-based object database, had a similar customer list, including JPMorgan Chase, UBS, Siemens, TI, and Florida Power & Light. That's a backend rather than an app, though in the Smalltalk world the line between database and application tiers is much blurrier. Still in use, though ownership has passed through several hands since the 80s.
Many apps not written in Smalltalk per se were direct idea-descendants. NeXTSTEP and WebObjects were built in Objective-C at NeXT, then bought by Apple. (Objective-C was explicitly "let's bring the Smalltalk lessons to a broader world.") In its early days WebObjects could build database-backed GUI and web apps amazingly easily compared to any competitor, and Apple used it for its online store and the iTunes Store. Another cousin was Metaphor Computer Systems. Founded by Xerox veterans, it sold Analyst-like workstations that let brand managers at consumer-goods giants like P&G, General Mills, Pillsbury, and Sara Lee analyze and report on sales and mix data, often pulled from point-of-sale scanners. That level of "what's happening in the field?" integration, in near-real-time (hours not months), with everything pulled together on one screen, was essentially unique at the time. And that users could build their own charts, reports, and workflows without programming? No one else had that either.
So there were notable Smalltalk apps, and many of them operated at substantial scale. They just weren’t consumer apps. And a lot of the direct descendants were much the same.

It's taught in at least one of the universities there.
I know ;)

Well, except for development environments.
Anyone know one that's worth looking at?
Cognitone Synfire is made with Smalltalk, I think: https://www.cognitone.com/products/mps/intro/page.stml . But it's not at all easy to install and use.
Mostly boring proprietary business applications.
dabbledb was fine

One example of a very widely used desktop application written in Smalltalk was the first version of Scratch.
This is like Pharo but for Gnome. So, a good interface for an smalltalk, suferior to GNU Smalltalk. Altough GST can be used scripted, for sure.
Its odd that some words have a squiggly red underline in that image.
no pictures of the IDE?
It is beautiful having all these people pushing the SoA forward.
not even a screenshot?
Now it seems there are two editors named Pulsar. This, and the successor to Atom.
