They are opening it wrong.
How do you open a single hinge device wrong?
I see people claiming that others are "closing it wrong". Something about you have to snap it using the edges, absolutely not push into the center?
OP was referring to a meme from the iPhone 4 era, where users complained about a dropped signal, and Steve Jobs responded to one person saying to not hold it a certain way.

Jobs wasn't exactly wrong (the antenna worked OK if you didn't bridge it with your finger):
