I could get behind this AI. I hope they sit in one of the 24h ground steamed warm tomato greenhouses, eating that wierd lamb flatbread I was served. Or Puffin.
I wonder why Iceland thinks they still need to promote their tourism, they get tons of them already. I guess it's because of capitalism, and economic competition.
I was there 2 years ago (and previously in 2019). I had a realization that maybe 80% of the car traffic are tourists (number pulled out of a volcanic vent) going from one tourist spot to the next. I realized this while sitting in a crossover SUV with 4 empty seats.
The roads into Reykjavik have traffic jams now, probably an oddity for a place of 140k.
Icelander here, it was worse in 2018. it's now a major force in the economy here, outpacing fishing which used to be top.
That being said we hate it but also like the things it brings, restaurant culture, new products and services. Tourist numbers were down 20% this summer (our high season). China just started direct flights here 3x a week.
It's a mixed bag.
This latest push however is pretty standard for the tourism industry consortium as a whole, the folks who live here never get much say in how we're portrayed, and most of the profits go to a handful of the same companies.
Talking about the city population. Although more relevant would be the whole capital city area, which I see has about 250k people.
I guess the 20% dive is due to the Trump-Netanyahu oil inflation.
It seems worrying to rely on tourism, places like Bali or Maldives crippled to a halt during Covid, and even Visit Norway is considering the environmental impact of its work. But hey, money!
Icelanders obviosly laugh at themselves first and a lot, so rolling out another joke for a specific occasion is just something they do, a lot.
AI is like bieng a kid again, when your parents start trying to force some new thing on you and are acting all WIERD huddling up whispering to each other and there friends, cause they all fucked up and into WHO KNOWS WHAT, except it's everybodys boss and you have to play along with doing the "extra curricular activities" whether you like them or not. There must be many poor souls who are bieng pushed into AI, not just by there boss, but by there parrents as well.
Icelands looking better by the second.
