That's not true at all. Significant shifts in governments and broadly related to that (Brexit etc) are always discussed and some of the most discussed topics in the history of HN.
I think the results are probably flooding most mainstream news and anyone here is probably invested enough to have already got news as to what percentage of America had voted for ...

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.
Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.
The "interesting new phenomenon" caveat for politics and mainstream stories is one of the most unevenly applied wild-card policies in the guidelines. Had things gone the other way, HN would be a lot more lenient about it.
No I don't recall but even today I've noted just how a number of insignificant enthusiastic otherwise polite comments on the election have been flagged hard. But what is supposed to happen and what does happen are two different things - but I feel at the end of the day there's little useful or interesting discussion to be had - there's going to be an awful lot of people rejoice common sense has arrived ... disappointment or how the show is about to head to the dogs.
Sadly the majority won't last. Democrats still lack an identity and an objective and the number 1 issue for Americans is the economy which there is no easy fix for. DEI, virtue signalling, immigration is not going to solve economic issues and will lead to a flip in 2030.
Why such cynical analysis? Four years is a long time, and it's trivially easy to trend up (economically) from where America is right now.
You also seem to take as a given that DEI, virtue signalling, immigration will be as it was in 2020, but I doubt it. Parties are capable of growth. The Democratic mainstream seems like they're less extreme now.
>The Democratic mainstream seems like they're less extreme now.
The Democratic mainstream was never extreme - that has always been a right-wing propaganda point, but you are generally correct. They are, as a party, trying to distance themselves from "leftist" and "progressive" politics, disavow trans rights and "woke" and rebrand as the sensible center-right alternative to Trumpism.
And that's why they will - as they always do - somehow snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We need an actual leftist party that actually defends the values they espouse, not a center-right party of neoliberal Quislings so desperate to impress the cool kids that they'll throw an election just to defend genocide.
One of the things here at HN taken as general rule of thumb is avoid posting article topics which are probably overwhelming current mainstream news.
That's not true. We've had non-stop celebrity news for the last week.
Oh, yeah, we all remember when Trump won and all the HN threads on it were flagged /s

A historic election not seen in decades is obviously an "interesting new phenomenon".

Remember when all the "Trump wins" thread were flagged?

It was irony.
Its more like bikeshedding subjects.

The news about the elections in the US is all over other media. It's not needed here.
It would be reasonable, if the moderators decide to allow it, to wait until America is awake.
Expecting a lack of bias from HN is like expecting a decent salad at KFC.
They have their reasons - it is what it is.
Plenty of other sites exist with news and discussion.
