A simple app like this ought to have only one point of tracking: data linked to you, other data (the in-app learning tracking).
Everything else is just skeevy AF. There is no need to track the user across other company’s websites and apps. And while I can understand your need for analytics (as it directly educates you on how users use your app, see what they do vs what they say), this should be opt-in from the very first splash screen.
While the free tier is generous and appreciated, I deeply value my privacy. I’m not touching this with a dirty barge pole.
And I hold a particular hatred for advertising. I was there in the mid to late 90s, when visiting the wrong website - or even a good website on a bad day! - auto-spawned so many pop-ups and pop-unders that the browser was completely obscured. And that any attempt to close even a single one of them would spawn a half dozen more like some demented hydra until even the computer ground to a halt and the only way to recover was to conduct a hard restart of the whole computer, losing all of your work.
I feel for those whose only option for revenue is to leverage ads, but that well was permanently poisoned for me decades ago. I go through extraordinary lengths to avoid ads, including having dropped cable TV in 2001, and leaping on board with the world’s first adblocker when it came out for Firefox (then Phoenix) back in early 2003. Even now, I have brutally extensive adblockers not only on my router, but even on my devices as system-level configuration profiles.
Because of that, I am not going to install the trial only to have all the ad revenue and a decent chunk of other stuff blocked. I’m not a hypocrite in that manner - I’ll wait until I am ready to buy it, at which time I hope all that spyware has become user-disableable.
Edit: not seeing spaced repetition mentioned anywhere in the copy. This is by far one of the most effective learning techniques, especially for subjects like languages. I would encourage you to look into spaced repetition, as AI can help evaluate the spacing needed and you’re already using flash cards.
